“The World’s Most Improbable Green City” is what National Geographic calls Dubai. Nestled in Arabian deserts, with sprawling structures of concrete, glass and steel; Dubai aspires to be the city with the smallest ecological footprint by 2050!

Driverless metro trains supplement the traffic-laden roads by transporting people. New residential developments have integrated recycling facilities for water & waste. Out in the desert, Dubai is building a giant solar power plant that will supply the cheapest and cleanest electricity. What more? We look at some of the reasons that will make post-Covid Dubai, everyone’s go to destination for business, travel and inspiration!

Dubai, the most populous city of United Arab Emirates, is located on the coast of the Persian Gulf. It boasts of the second busiest airport in the world, making it a focal point of business activities across the world. Oil revenue being the largest contributor, Dubai’s economy relies also on trade, tourism, aviation, real estate and financial services. Originally established as a fishing village in early 18th century, Dubai experienced a lot of changes over time and after discovering oil in 1966, it went on to become one of the most modern cities in the world. Dubai utilized its oil wealth to enhance other sectors of its economy by building physical infrastructure.

Today, trade is at the core of Dubai’s economy, with the city operating two of world’s largest ports and a busy international air cargo hub. But it doesn’t stop here, Dubai keeps innovating and attracting more and more business opportunities from across the world. The Dubai Silk Road strategy to capitalize on logistics infrastructure and global connections has established logistics as the leading business sector. Almost 30 free trade economy zones have been developed to attract foreign investments without the need for a local partner. These zones offer tax and custom duty concessions. Further, Dubai’s Virtual Company License (VCL) allows investors to do business in Dubai digitally without living in the Emirate. Launched late October 2020, it has already attracted more than 100,000 companies. VCL is expected to help UK businesses by allowing them to explore new markets without setting shop in Dubai amidst the current economic downturn due to the global pandemic.

Continuing their planned strategy to attract the best of the minds in a variety of disciplines from Artificial Intelligence, Biotechnology, and Electronics to epidemiology, UAE has approved ‘Golden visa’ allowing 10-year residency. Beginning of 2020, Dubai embarked on a revolutionary “Dubai Future District” that will pave the way for Dubai’s non-oil future economy. New-age companies from around the world are welcome to catapult this district towards an audacious target of AED 2 trillion by 2025. With carefully conceived initiatives, the Future district is expected to pave the way for new business areas.

Along with all these initiatives, continuous, far-sighted innovation continues to make its forays in Dubai. Last year, Dubai built the largest 3D-printed structure in the world; with 3 workers and a printer to build it. It is now used by Dubai Municipality. Extending this, there are plans to build 25% of buildings in Dubai that are based on 3D printing technology by 2030. Dubai is releasing world’s first standards for autonomous vehicles; with first driverless cars on Dubai roads by 2021. Dubai holds an ambitious plan to make 25% of Dubai’s transportation autonomous by 2030. Recognizing Dubai to be 21st century’s global transport hub backed by thoughtful leadership, Hyperloop One signed an agreement with Dubai to explore high-speed routes in the UAE. Hyperloop aims to revolutionize the transport industry in the region and make this segment of supreme quality, like everything else the city stands for.

The visionary leadership of Dubai is the backbone of success and strength for the Emirate. The leaders have worked hard to create the culture of excellence, world class experience and quality lifestyle to associate with the brand, that is, Dubai. Despite its fast growth and accessibility, UAE is one of the safest countries. With a 17,500 strong Police force for Dubai, it is one of the most technologically advanced police organizations in the world. It has recently announced its latest project – ‘Police without Policemen’, which will make Dubai a city of future with three specific futuristic solutions – 1) fixed cameras on homes and fences; 2) a surveillance blimp; and 3) ‘Station in Patrol’ for rapid emergency response.

Dubai is not just business, trade and regulations. Tourism in Dubai is one of the most popular and attractive parts of Dubai government’s strategy to maintain the flow of foreign cash into the Emirates. More than $30 billion were spent in 2018 by around 18 million visitors. Nicknamed as Shopping capital of the Middle East, Dubai draws a large number of shopping tourists. Tourism has been greatly enhanced by the ever-growing, Dubai-owned airline, Emirates Airlines which operates a large and modern aircraft fleet. Home to a large number of international sporting events, Dubai’s art and film industries have also blossomed in this century through annual art fairs and film festivals, with both local and international creativity benefiting. And needless to say, isn’t everyone looking forward to Expo 2020? Also, recently, our favourite travel vlogger, Nas Daily, decided to open an office in Dubai!
